Former NBA player Jontay Porter is set to appear in court for an arraignment and plea agreement hearing in connection to a federal criminal case linked to a betting scandal that led to his ban from the league earlier this year. The court records indicate that Porter is facing felony charges, although the specific details have not been disclosed by prosecutors.

Porter's attorney has not provided any comments since the court documents were filed, but previously mentioned that Porter was cooperating with authorities while undergoing treatment for a gambling addiction.

The case against Porter is connected to an ongoing prosecution involving four other individuals who have been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. These individuals allegedly profited from inside information provided by an NBA player, enabling them to place winning bets on the player's underperformance in certain games.

The complaint did not name the player involved but mentioned that he had spoken to investigators in hopes of receiving leniency if charged. The player was allegedly pressured to exit games early to settle gambling debts, resulting in bets being placed against his performance.

Following investigations by the NBA, it was discovered that Porter not only exited games for the benefit of gamblers but also placed bets on NBA games in which he did not participate, including betting against his own team.

Porter, who played for the Toronto Raptors and the Memphis Grizzlies, averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 26 games this season. His NBA salary was approximately $410,000.

The legal proceedings surrounding Porter's case highlight the serious consequences of involvement in betting scandals and the importance of maintaining integrity in professional sports.
