Former MVP argues Steelers shouldn’t re-sign Russell Wilson

Cam Newton, a vocal critic of Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, recently weighed in on who he believes should lead the Black and Gold in 2025.

While appearing on ESPN’s First Take, the 2015 MVP was asked if the Steelers should re-sign Wilson. Newton kept his response short and sweet: “No. But you bring back Justin Fields though.”

Newton elaborated on his stance, emphasizing the importance of developing Fields for the Steelers’ future rather than relying on the aging Wilson. He even boldly compared Fields’ skill set to that of Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson. While Fields’ athletic prowess is undeniable, the comparison left some scratching their heads.

Wilson has brought a steadying veteran presence to the Steelers, while Fields has displayed flashes of brilliance throughout the season. Newton’s remarks spark the question: will Wilson step aside and leave the throne for Fields in 2025, or will the veteran quarterback return to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers?
