Former model Marie Helvin, 69, says she's so broke she may have to work in a supermarket

Former fashion model Marie Helvin has revealed she has "used up" most of her savings and is now considering applying for a job in a supermarket.

The 69-year-old has said she is "seriously thinking about going home" to Hawaii to escape ageism in the workplace.

Marie was one of the original supermodels and worked for designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and Valentino throughout her career.

She also worked in TV and radio and covered everything from books to travel, but work seems to have dried up as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

"I’m completely self-reliant, and I don’t know what I am going to do, because during the pandemic period I’ve used up most of my savings now.

"I’m seriously thinking about going home," Marie told MailOnline.

She added: "They have less stigma about age with getting jobs. You can get a job at Whole Foods in your 80s in America. Put it this way, I wouldn’t apply to work in Whole Foods here. But back home in Hawaii, if I needed to, I’d go there and work."

Marie has been involved with a range of famous men throughout her life, including chef Marco Pierre White, Peter Gabriel and even former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan.

She later went on to marry photographer David Bailey.

The pair were married for 10 years before divorcing in 1985. Marie walked away with a divorce settlement of £100,000. She has since remained unmarried, but says it would be good to have some financial support.

Marie said it would be nice would be to have help so the 'expenses of getting older' could be shared.

Following her divorce from David, Marie embarked on a four-year relationship with the Duchess of Cornwall’s brother, Mark Shand.

He died after an accident in 2014 at the age of 62.

Marie, who turns 70 in August, recently revealed her youthful appearance is not 100% natural.

"I do have Botox twice a year, just enough so that I don't look sad," she told The Third Act podcast.

She also said she hopes to find someone to start a new relationship with.

"If I am ever lucky enough to meet someone, then I’d hope that he might be older and divorced or widowed, I mean, I don’t want to go out with some young kid."
