Former MLA Sahungra, family evicted from govt accommodation

Former MLA from Garhshankar, Shingara Ram Sahungra and his family has been evicted, from residential quarters, once again on Wednesday.

They were removed from irrigation department’s quarters in the town which they had forcibly occupied about a month ago.

The family has been living under sky ever since their belongings were thrown out by the police in June.

But, recently they had reoccupied the house, prompting the administration to get a criminal tress-pass case registered against the former BSP leader.

Sahungra had not vacated the type-4 government house where he moved in after becoming MLA in 1992.

He did not even pay the rent on the pretext of not having enough resources.

As per irrigation department record, rent to the tune of `30.69 lakh was outstanding against him. In his absence, a large posse of police, led by Garhshankar deputy superintendent of police Ranjit Singh, evacuated the house.

The police have taken their belongings into custody. Sahungra’s wife Suman and three children did not resist while they were being moved out. Sub divisional magistrate H S Dhaliwal oversaw the operation. The MLA remained unavailable for comments.

The department had already set up its office but the ex-MLA encroached upon the said area by throwing out official belongings, said irrigation executive engineer Vijay Gill.

“The family cannot live illegally in the government building, so we made a fresh plea to the administration to help free it,” he remarked.

“We offered to transport their goods where they wanted but they declined, so we shifted the same to one of the official buildings,” he informed.
