Communist Party of lndia (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leader and former MLA James Mathew has said that he has no plans to quit politics and he is launching a child-care centre at Talap in Kannur on June 1.
He spoke to reporters at the Kannur press club amid reports of him quitting active politics.
Dismissing the reports, Mr. Mathew on Wednesday said that his new venture, which would also have a public study and research centre, was coming up with the knowledge and permission of the party. Reiterating that he had not decided to quit active politics, he said the matter had been misreported.
He said that once he started the centre he would not have enough time and that was why he opted out of the State committee of the party.
He was of the opinion that there should be a retirement from organisational responsibilities. “A lot of talented people are out there and they should be given a chance,” he said.
Excluded from State panel
Earlier, following his request, he was not included in the CPI(M) State committee.
Mr. Mathew started his political career through the Students Federation of India, a Left-wing student movement. He was the minority face of the CPI(M) and twice contested from the Irikkur constituency. He represented Taliparamba constituency twice. His wife N. Sukanya is a councillor in the Kannur Corporation.
