Former Mississippi Sheriff's Deputy Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison

prison

A former Mississippi sheriff’s deputy, Hunter Elward, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday morning for his involvement in the torture of two Black men in January 2023. This sentencing comes after the victims, Parker and Jenkins, along with their families and attorneys, called for the maximum sentences for all six officers involved in the incident.

Lead attorney Malik Shabazz referred to the officers as the Rankin County 'Goon Squad' and emphasized the importance of this day for accountability in cases of police brutality, particularly against people of color.

The lawsuit filed by Jenkins and Parker detailed the officers' illegal entry into their home, where they subjected the victims to handcuffing, kicking, waterboarding, tasering, and attempted sexual assault. The officers also used racial slurs during the violent acts, indicating a clear motivation based on race.

Three of the officers, including Elward, pleaded guilty to federal charges related to a separate incident in December 2022 and will face sentencing this week. Additionally, all six former officers pleaded guilty to state charges stemming from the January 2023 incident, including conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and various other charges.

While the criminal cases are progressing, civil rights litigation on behalf of Jenkins and Parker is ongoing, highlighting the need for continued accountability and justice in cases of police misconduct.
