Former Manchester United striker says Erik ten Hag would be better off without Cristiano Ronaldo

Teddy Sheringham has suggested that Manchester United would create big transfer opportunities for themselves if they allow Cristiano Ronaldo to leave.

The wantaway superstar is not with the squad on their pre-season tour due to family reasons. However, he has become unsettled at Old Trafford in recent weeks.

He had been linked with a move to Chelsea, but that door has reportedly now been shut with the likes of Bayern Munich also rebuffing the idea of a transfer. Ronaldo netted 24 times in his homecoming campaign but some fans feel his presence stifled team cohesion.

Sheringham believes that the Portugal captain’s exit would be beneficial to United in that it would allow the club to bring in more players this summer. He told 8Xbet (via the Daily Mail ) he wasn’t surprised to hear of Ronaldo’s exit wish.

“I half saw it coming,” he said. “People are saying shall Ten Hag build his team around Ronaldo, but if he wants to go he goes. That opens up a whole new corridor for United.

'You could get in two or three players on that sort of wage and that is a lot of money they could spend each month. Life goes on, he wants to go and play somewhere else so get players in that you know who are going to be strong and stable throughout the season.”

Sheringham added that Ronaldo may be comparing the current United dressing room to that of his first stint at the club. He argued that the attacker has a right to want the best for his career and should leave if he feels United will not serve this.

He added: “Ronaldo will have been watching what has been going on, he will feel the vibes from how it was in Fergie's time and how the club is being run now and he'll get the vibes that he does not like what he is seeing going on.

“If you stand still in football you fall and maybe Ronaldo sees the same. Where is that big signing coming from?

“If I'm Ronaldo now I'm saying go on then United, excite me…what are you doing in the transfer market? Ronaldo has got maybe another year or two years max at the top level and he deserves to enjoy his football at the top of his game.”
