Former Manchester United player retires as released midfielder finds new club

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Sunday, July 2.

Cleverley announces retirement in emotional statement

Former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has been forced to retire at the age of 33.

The Watford captain issued a statement on Saturday lunchtime to reveal that he has been forced to hang up his boots because of injury. The Reds academy graduate missed almost all of last season because of an Achilles problem, being restricted to just four appearances.

He last appeared for Watford on February 11, stepping off the bench as a second-half substitute during a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Vicarage Road. He joined the Hornets on a permanent deal in 2017 after two previous loan spells in Hertfordshire.

Cleverley made a total of 181 appearances for the Championship club across three spells, scoring 19 goals and registering 15 assists.

Former midfielder signs for new club

Ethan Galbraith has joined League One side Leyton Orient following his departure from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old confirmed in May he would be departing United this summer. He made his senior debut for the Reds in November 2019, stepping off the bench as a late substitute in a 2-1 Europa League defeat to FC Astana for what proved to be his sole first-team appearance for the club.

Galbraith joined United's academy from Linfield in 2017 and he signed his first professional contract with the club the following year. He has spent the past two seasons out in the EFL getting minutes under his belt in men's professional football.

Galbraith spent the 2021/22 campaign with Doncaster Rovers in League One, scoring once in 36 games for Donny as the Yorkshire side were relegated to League Two.
