Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho breaks silence on Chelsea takeover

Jose Mourinho has admitted he had a preference as to who he wanted to take over Chelsea, but declined to disclose it.

The Portuguese manager won three Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup across two stints at Stamford Bridge, prior to his Europa League and League Cup successes at Manchester United. The Blues are set to officially finalise their ownership transition from the sanctioned Roman Abramovich in the coming weeks.

Chelsea announced on Saturday that they would be run by a consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly and backed by a private equity firm from California. The papers have not yet been officially signed by the UK government or the Premier League.

But it is expected that the deal will go through smoothly before May 31. Mourinho, meanwhile, is preparing for Roma’s Europa Conference League final with Feyenoord later this month, but stopped to give his thoughts on the Chelsea takeover in an interview Sky Sports.

He said: “If you ask me, do I have somebody that I would love to take over from ‘my Chelsea’? Yes, I have.

“But I close my mouth and I just know that the club reached such a level that it doesn’t matter who it’s with. Chelsea will always be Chelsea, Chelsea will always be big and my house will always be 200 metres away from the stadium.

“So I want to keep listening to the sound of happiness and success. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be like that.”

Mourinho is going for his first silverware since his 2017 double success at United. The Old Trafford outfit are yet to lift a trophy following the exit of the 59-year-old.
