Former Manchester City striker Ferran Torres scores first Barcelona goal

Former Manchester City striker Ferran Torres magnificently opened his Barcelona account on Thursday night.

In just his second appearance for Xavi's side, Torres showed exactly what he was capable of as he effortlessly curled an effort into the top-right corner against Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey.

An El Clasico defeat was a sour start to his life at Barcelona as they were beaten in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final thanks to Fede Valverde's winner in extra time.

Their early exit from Saudi Arabia allowed for more preparation for their Copa clash with Athletic - who were beaten by Atletico Madrid in the other last-four clash in the Middle East.

The £46.7m-signing restored parity after Iker Munian opened the scoring after just two minutes.

After 43 appearances for City, which brought 16 goals, Torres called time on his stint in the Premier League by returning to the Spanish top flight where he previously made his name for Valencia.

His final appearance for the Blues came in November during the win over Leicester City and he found the back of the net for the last time with his brace in the rout over Arsenal.

Although, he will be fondly remembered for his spectacular hat-trick against Newcastle as he helped Pep Guardiola's side on course to regain their Premier League crown.

He picked up an ankle injury during Spain's UEFA Nations League exploits and spent three months on the sideline.

Signing a five-year deal, Torres had a €1bn release clause added in his contract but his arrival spelt problems for Xavi as he couldn't register the attacker.

Samuel Umtiti's four-year extension and pay cut pushed the 21-year-old's registration over the line.
