Former Man City defender refuses to change mind about title after Liverpool 'surprise'

Liverpool have still been backed to win the Premier League by a former Manchester City player - despite dropping points against Fulham.

The Reds were forced to settle for just a point in their first Premier League match of the season. Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage, on a day that could have seen them leave empty handed.

Aleksandar Mitrovic gave the home side the lead in the first half, before substitute Darwin Nunez equalised on his Premier League debut. Mitrovic then put Fulham back in front from the penalty spot, leaving Mohamed Salah to get Liverpool’s second and earn a point in West London.

Despite Liverpool dropping points early on in the title race, they are still being backed by a former Man City player to win the title. City themselves take on West Ham on Sunday in their first fixture of the campaign.

Richard Dunne, who made more than 300 appearances for Man City, has still tipped Liverpool to beat his old club in the title race. However, the former Republic of Ireland international went on to admit his surprise over the draw with Fulham.

“I still expect Liverpool to go further than Man City this season,” Dunne told Premier Sports after Liverpool’s draw at Craven Cottage. “I think they’ll win the league.

“Looking at what Liverpool have won and that group of players that they’ve had, to have only won one Premier League title, I think they’ll be disappointed with it.

“If they want to be judged as one of the best sides that the Premier League has seen, which people are talking about them being, they need another league title.

“This year there’s been a huge upheaval with Man City’s squad in terms of three or four players leaving and a couple coming in.

“Not so much at Liverpool, I know they’ve lost (Sadio) Mane and replaced him with (Darwin) Nunez, but for a league squad I think they’ve got a big opportunity, but that result today surprised me.“
