Former Liverpool striker 'dreams' of Premier League move after Anfield exit

Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi says it's his 'dream' to play in the Premier League, after departing Anfield on a permanent transfer last summer.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds in 2015 and spent the entirety of his six years at the club out on loan across Europe due to not having a work permit.

Awoniyi was finally granted one in May last year, but opted to join Union Berlin on a permanent basis, having spent the 2020/21 season on loan with the Bundesliga side.

He's registered an impressive 14 goals in all competitions so far this season, but has admitted a Premier League move is his dream.

“The Premier League is my dream. Everyone knows that, including here in the club,” he told German outlet Kicker.

“The decisive difference for me is that if I lived in England, it would be easier for my wife and child, if only because of the language.

“Also, my sister and a brother live on the island.”

Liverpool raised £6.5m from the sale, despite Awoniyi not making a single first team appearance for the club.

West Brom and Fulham were among the English clubs reportedly interested in a move for the player, prior to his switch to Union Berlin.

Following his exit in the summer, the Nigeria international spoke candidly, insisting signing for Liverpool was 'one of the best things that happened' to him.

"I have always said that Liverpool is one of the best things that happened to me as a footballer," he told Tribal Football back in November.

"They gave me the platform to achieve my dream and with them I have no regret at all.

"I do not see not being able to play a game in the Premier League as a regret because in life, with time, everything is still possible.

“So I can count my time as a Liverpool player as something great for my career.”
