Former Liverpool star Lucas Leiva gives health update months after heart issue found

Former Liverpool star Lucas Leiva will undergo further tests on his condition months after being told to 'stay away' from football.

The ex-Reds midfielder, who now plays for Brazilian club Gremio, was forced to temporarily stop playing football in December due to a possible heart issue. Lucas was taken out of training after a potential cardiac issue was detected during routine screening.

The 36-year-old released a statement back in December that he had been referred to see a specialist and advised to "stay away" from high-performance physical activity for between two and three months. Now an update has emerged on the status of the former Liverpool star.

Lucas released another statement on Twitter, which was also published on Gremio’s club website, which confirmed that the ex-Red will now undergo further tests three months after being told to step away from football.

The statement read: “The Department of Science, Health and Performance of Gremio Football Porto Alegrense informs that the athlete Lucas Leiva has started a new battery of tests to reassess his clinical condition.

“The results will be made available at the end of next week and the club will announce itself in due course.”

Lucas spent 10 years as a Liverpool player from 2007-17, during which time he made 346 appearances and became a fan favourite. He left to join Lazio, and would spend five years in Italy, before returning to his boyhood club Gremio in 2022.
