Former Liverpool captain raves about Alexis Mac Allister as Reds press ahead with transfer

Paul Ince has told Alexis Mac Allister he is the complete package following his stoppage-time winner against Manchester United.

In the dying embers on Thursday night, Brighton were awarded a penalty after a drab affair at the Amex. Up stepped Mac Allister to bury home in the 99th minute and keep Liverpool’s faint Champions League hopes alive.

The Seagulls will also be smelling blood as they moved just four points behind the Reds - despite playing two games less. Most pundits considered the top-four race a formality but defeat for Man United has opened the window of opportunity slightly.

Brighton’s hero, Mac Allister, could even be donning Liverpool colours next season. The ECHO understands that the Reds are pressing ahead with a move

Former Reds midfielder Ince was left stunned by the 24-year-old while interviewing him post-match. He told Mac Allister: “For me, it’s not just about the goal,” he told the Argentine. “Watching you play tonight… it’s your work rate, your passing ability, you’re just an all-round player.

“Me and Jamie (Redknapp) have played in midfield and we just loved watching you play because everything you do, you do it correctly. You get back, you get up, you get down, you score goals. It was lovely to watch you play today.”

Once Mac Allister left, Ince continued with the superlatives about the potential Liverpool target. The Argentine’s confident spot-kick was his ninth goal in a remarkable campaign for the Seagulls.

“We were standing next to a World Cup winner,” Ince added. “Someone who scored in the last minute against Manchester United, but he’s so humble.

“He’s talking about the young South American kids that he wants to look after – and he’s young himself. But, it’s not about him, it’s about the team ethic and he works within that. He’s happy to toe the line, he’s happy to do the dirty bit of football, but he’s also a very, very talented player.”
