Former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith has passed away at the age of 74.

Widely known on Merseyside as 'The Anfield Iron', Smith was an integral part of the club's golden era in the 1960s and 70s, playing for the Reds for 18 years before his retirement in 1978.

The Liverpool great was also a key part of the team that won the FA Cup for the first time back in 1965, with Bill Shankly as manager.

Born in Liverpool in 1945, Smith made 638 appearances for the club after making his debut in 1960, scoring 48 goals and winning nine major trophies, as well as captaining the Reds for three years.

Liverpool paid tribute to the club legend, tweeting: "We're deeply saddened by the passing of our former captain Tommy Smith, aged 74.

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Tommy’s family and many friends. Rest in peace, the Anfield Iron."

Former defender Jamie Carragher also joined in paying their respects to Smith, tweeting: "RIP The Anfield Iron Tommy Smith. One of the clubs all time greats."

Tommy is survived by his wife Janette, son Darren and four grandchildren, Matthew, William, Jessica and Imogen.
