Golden Tate is back in uniform, but it’s not a football jersey. The longtime Lions wide receiver, who has not played in the NFL since 2020, is now playing some minor league baseball.
Tate, now 33, signed a contract with the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League. In a joint statement from the league via social media, Tate had this to say about his budding baseball journey,
“I am extremely thankful to the West Coast League and the Port Angeles Lefties for allowing me to join their league As some might know, I was drafted twice in baseball. As a child, my first love was baseball, so I’m excited about the opportunity to compete against some of the best young players in the league.”
Tate played for the Lions from 2014 through the first part of the 2018 campaign, catching at least 90 passes in all four full seasons in Detroit. He earned his only Pro Bowl nod in his 11-year career in 2014 after signing as a free agent from the Seattle Seahawks. The Lions unpopularly traded him to the New York Giants in 2018.
There is a baseball background with Tate. He played in the outfield for Notre Dame and was twice drafted by MLB teams, once after high school and again after college.
