Former Leeds United manager Brian McDermott can see Reading midfielder John Swift moving to ‘someone like’ the Whites in the summer. Swift is out of contract at the Royals at the end of the season and it appears very unlikely that he will be signing a new one.
The 26-year-old has been a shining light in an otherwise dismal season for Reading, as his tally of 11 goals and 13 assists, have almost single-handedly kept them out of the bottom three. Reading currently sit 21st in the Championship and just five points clear of the chasing pack.
Swift has been linked with a move away from the Select Car Leasing Stadium for a number of months now, with several Premier League clubs including Leeds, Burnley and Brentford all reportedly keen. Despite the club’s financial problems, no move ever materialised, though, and he now looks destined to leave on a free transfer this summer.

McDermott, who has managed Reading as well as the Whites during his career, thinks he is good enough technically to fit in at clubs such as Aston Villa or Leeds but says it is difficult to judge whether he will hit the ground running as he hasn’t played at that level before.
Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, he said: “It’s hard to say – you could stick him in at someone like Aston Villa as technically he’s very good. He makes goals, he scores goals and I can see him ending up at somewhere like Aston Villa or someone like Leeds United. He can play, he sees a pass but it’s hard to say [how good he will be] until you put them in that environment.”
