Former Jaguars QB signs with Dolphins practice squad

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard signed to the Miami Dolphins practice squad on Wednesday.

The Jaguars released Beathard with an injury settlement in August after he hurt his groin during the preseason.

The move prevented Jacksonville from being able to bring him back through Week 7, per NFL rules, although now that the deadline has passed, it appears a reunion was not in the cards.

Beathard spent the 2021-23 seasons as Trevor Lawrence’s backup at quarterback, after beginning his career with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.

He completed 49-of-66 passes for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception over 13 appearances with Jacksonville, bringing his career passing line to 340-of-563 for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Beathard joins the Dolphins amid their quarterback shuffle since starter Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 2, leading to his placement on the injured reserve. Tagovailoa is scheduled to return to practice Wednesday and could be activated from the reserve this week.

Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley have started in place of Tagovailoa for Miami, with Tim Boyle also receiving playing time. The Dolphins rank last in the NFL for averaging 11.7 points per game this season.
