Former Irish rugby star Hugo MacNeill is running for the Seanad.
There is a vacancy in the Upper House following the Dublin Bay South by-election win by Ivana Bacik - she has become a TD - and Mr MacNeill has thrown his hat in the ring to take Ms Bacik’s place in the Seanad.
If he is successful in winning a seat on the Trinity Universitie panel, Mr MacNeill will join his wife, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, in Leinster House.
She is a Fine Gael TD for the Dún Laoghaire constituency in Dublin.
Mr MacNeill was a famous rugby player in the 1980s, playing for Ireland and the British and Irish Lions.
He was one of the bosses in Ireland’s Goldman Sachs division, working with them for over 30 years.
Announcing his entrance into the Seanad election race tonight, Mr MacNeill said: “I was proud to run in the 2020 Seanad election where I came in just behind three excellent Senators who retained their seats, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into another energetic and exciting campaign.
“I have a deep and passionate commitment to our country and to Trinity and I look forward to engaging with as many people as possible in the course of the weeks to come, asking them to give me their Number 1 vote.”
