Former Houston college basketball player Reggie Chaney dies aged 23 just before joining Greek team

Former Houston college basketball player Reggie Chaney has died at the age of 23.

Mr Chaney died on Monday night. No cause of death is currently known.

He played at the University of Houston for three seasons after a two-season stint with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Mr Chaney was reportedly planning to join a Greek professional basketball team, the AE Psychiko, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Razorbacks head coach Eric Musselman said that the “men’s basketball family is devastated to hear of the loss of Reggie Chaney,” according to WholeHogSports.

“He was a relentless worker and loved by his coaches and teammates. His family is in our thoughts and prayers,” Mr Musselman said.

Justin Gorham, a former Houston teammate, praised Mr Chaney for his drive and reliability.

“Two words that describe Reggie ‘Always Dependable,’” Mr Gorham wrote on X/Twitter. “No matter the situation yk Reg gonna give his 110%. Glad I got the chance to lace em up with him, without Reg we don’t accomplish half the things we did. Rest easy brother LOVE.”

Mason Jones, another former teammate, suggested that the basketball player was “going through” something prior to his death.

“Pls give Reggie his flowers … if only y’all knew what he was really going through .. just a kid from Tulsa .. going to miss you brotha fr .. real life brotha, roommate and one of the realest guys you will ever meet!” Mr Jones wrote in a tribute.

Mr Chaney played more than 100 games with the University of Houston.
