Former House Intelligence Chair Concerned About Committee Focus

mike turner

Former House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner, a Republican from Ohio, expressed concerns about the committee potentially shifting its focus away from national security issues towards the concept of the 'deep state.' Turner's worries arose following his removal as chair by House Speaker Mike Johnson.

During an appearance on CBS' 'Face the Nation,' Turner emphasized the importance of maintaining a focus on national security within the committee. He highlighted that his primary focus during his tenure as chair had been on matters related to national security.

President Donald Trump has recently taken actions to address what he perceives as elements of the 'deep state' within Washington. Trump's efforts to identify and address individuals who may oppose his policies have become a significant priority for the administration.

Turner mentioned that initial discussions with Johnson indicated that concerns from Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida estate, may have played a role in his removal as committee chair. However, he later clarified that Johnson had retracted that statement, and the president's staff had reassured him that this was not the case.

Despite being replaced as chair, Turner will continue to be involved in national security efforts in Congress. He will lead the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and maintain his position on the Armed Services Committee.

Turner has been a vocal advocate for the United States' support of Ukraine, even as Trump has expressed reservations about the level of US aid provided to the country. Some members of Turner's party have called for a reduction or cessation of aid to Ukraine, but Turner has remained steadfast in his support for continued assistance.
