Former Hockey Star Konstantin Koltsov Dies At Age 42

Koltsov played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and won championships with Salavat Yulaev Ufa.

Konstantin Koltsov, a former hockey star known for his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins and participation in two Olympics, has passed away at the age of 42. The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) team, Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where Koltsov served on the coaching staff, confirmed the news with a statement expressing deep sorrow over his loss.

During his career, Koltsov made significant contributions to Salavat Yulaev, winning the Russian Championship and the Gagarin Cup as part of the team. He transitioned to coaching after retiring from professional ice hockey in November 2016.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom Koltsov played for three seasons from 2002 to 2006, also paid tribute to him, extending their condolences to his family and friends.

Koltsov's hockey journey spanned 18 years, including appearances in the IIHF World Championships and the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games representing Belarus. He was drafted into the NHL in 1999 and played 144 games in the league.

Following his retirement, Koltsov joined the Kontinental Hockey League, where he continued to showcase his skills until 2016. In recent years, he was in a relationship with professional tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, currently ranked No. 2 in the world.

The couple shared glimpses of their life together on social media, with Sabalenka posting affectionate messages and photos celebrating Koltsov's birthday and their relationship milestones. Koltsov reportedly has three children from a previous relationship, and Sabalenka has shared moments with his youngest son, Stefan, on her Instagram account.

As the hockey community mourns the loss of Konstantin Koltsov, his legacy as a talented player and coach will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
