The JR Yamanote Line's former Harajuku Station is scheduled to be dismantled beginning Aug. 24 and a commercial facility with a reproduction of the station's facade will be built on the site.
The old station building, completed in 1924, was the oldest wooden station in Tokyo up until its closure on March 21 due to the opening of a new one.
It was originally scheduled to be dismantled after being used as a staff waiting area during the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, but since the Games have been postponed, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) announced Friday its decision to dismantle the building prior to the Games for safety reasons.

According to the company, the materials from the old station building will be used in the construction of the new commercial facility that is set to be completed after next year's Games at the earliest.
