Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Lawrence Cager signed a reserve/futures contract with the Washington Commanders. Cager will compete for a roster spot with the Commanders in 2025 and will not play in Washington’s NFL playoff game against the Detroit Lions.
The New York Giants released Cager ahead of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline in August. The Giants re-signed Cager to their practice squad before releasing him in October.
Cager did not appear in any games in 2024. He has played in 21 NFL games and has 19 career receptions for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
Cager plays tight end in the NFL and recorded four catches for 36 yards and a touchdown during the 2023 season with New York.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end/wide receiver will try to earn a roster or practice squad spot with the Commanders. Cager finished the 2022 season with a career-high 13 receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Cager had NFL stops with the New York Jets (2020, 2022) and Cleveland Browns (2021). The former Georgia star is an excellent red zone target due to his size and outstanding ability to win contested-catch situations.
Cager spent three seasons with the Miami Hurricanes before transferring to UGA for the 2019 season. He finished his 33-game college career with 14 touchdowns and 1,157 receiving yards.
