Former football club manager and teacher dies after being hit by HGV

Tributes have been paid to a former football club manager who died after being hit by a HGV at a busy junction in Bury.

Paddy McCafferty was tragically killed after a crash at the junction of Radcliffe New Road and Bury New Road in the Whitefield area at around 1.30pm on March 15. The 76-year-old was walking when a lorry crashed into him.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. In a previous statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said the HGV driver remained to assist police with their investigations.

A spokesperson for Rochdale Coroners' Court confirmed they had received a file in relation to Mr McCafferty's death. An inquest will be opened at a later date.

Mr McCafferty was a former manager and club official at Prestwich Heys AFC, the club said in a statement. He was well-known on the local football scene and 'had time for everyone'.

He also worked as a teacher at Stand Grammar. In full, the tribute posted on Prestwich Heys AFC website: "We are sad to report the passing of Paddy, a former Manager and Club official.

"It is with sadness the club has learned of the passing of Paddy McCafferty following a road traffic accident in Whitefield earlier this week. Paddy, was a well known figure on the local football scene.

"He was manager of the Parkside Football team that enjoyed much success in the South East Lancashire League in the early 1980's. He then saw many of that side move to Heys and form the nucleus of the side that won the Manchester League Division One title in 1986 and came within a whisker of winning the Premier Division the following season under Steve Braithwaite.

"In 1995-96 Paddy was to become joint manager at Heys with Mark McGee before then becoming involved at the club away from the playing side, most notably as Groundsman in the Adie Moran era. Paddy also turned his hand to writing match reports too. Paddy was also well known as a match official, refereeing and running the line in the Bury Sunday League.

"By profession he was a teacher and will be remembered by many at Stand Grammar. Always great company and with time for everyone, he will sadly be missed.

"We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. Rest in Peace, Paddy."

Any witnesses of the crash, or anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage, should contact police. GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit can be contacted on on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 1594-15/3/2023.
