Former Florida women's tennis coach Andy Brandi dies at 72

Former Florida women's tennis coach Andy Brandi has died at the age of 72.

In unfortunate news for the world of tennis, former Florida women's tennis coach Andy Brandi has passed away at the age of 72. Brandi, who led the Gators for 17 seasons, left an indelible mark on the college tennis landscape with his remarkable success and unwavering dedication to the sport. The cause of his death was an illness he had been battling.

Brandi's coaching career was nothing short of extraordinary. During his tenure, the Gators achieved an impressive winning percentage of .914. His teams secured three national championships, in 1992, 1996, and 1998, solidifying their place among the elite in collegiate women's tennis. Under Brandi's guidance, Florida claimed an astounding 14 Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular-season titles and 10 conference tournament crowns.

Former Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley spoke highly of Brandi, describing him as a true winner. 'Simply put, Andy Brandi was a winner in every sense of the word,' said Foley. 'He was one of my all-time favorite coaches here.' Such praise is a testament to Brandi's excellence as a leader and mentor to his athletes.

After retiring in 2001 with an incredible win-loss record of 460-43, Brandi was rightfully inducted into the University of Florida's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006, an honor that recognized his significant contributions to the program. However, in 2017, Brandi made a surprising return to coaching when he joined his son as co-head coach for the LSU men's tennis team. He continued to exhibit his passion for the sport during his five-year tenure at LSU, making an impact on a new generation of players.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1952, Brandi pursued his love for tennis even during his college years at Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas, where he played on the men's tennis team. Upon graduating with a business degree, Brandi transitioned seamlessly into coaching, recognizing his true calling in life. Before joining the University of Florida, he served as the executive director at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Beyond his coaching accolades, Brandi's impact extended far beyond the tennis court. He was known for his humility, patience, and dedication to his players. He nurtured their skills and instilled in them values that would serve them not only in the world of tennis but also in life.

Andy Brandi is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, and their son, Chris. His untimely passing leaves a void in the tennis community, but his legacy as a successful coach and compassionate mentor will forever be remembered. The impact he had on countless athletes and his unwavering commitment to the sport will continue to inspire future generations of tennis players. Rest in peace, Coach Brandi. Your contributions to the game will never be forgotten.
