A former federal Labor staffer accused of rape has been committed to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court.
Alexander Matters, who is aged in his 20s, was sacked from the office of federal Labor MP David Smith after he was arrested on two charges of rape last year.
Police began investigating in August when a woman went to police with a complaint about an incident that allegedly occurred in April.
Mr Matters was brought into court in September after a police search of his home in Canberra's city centre.
He was initially referred to the Canberra Hospital for a psychiatric report but was back in court a day later, and then released on bail.
In October, more charges were brought against him after a second woman came forward to accuse Mr Matters of committing additional sexual offences in May 2021.
Mr Matters appeared via telephone link in the ACT Magistrates Court today.
He pleaded not guilty to a total of four charges, three of rape and one of committing an act of indecency.
Special Magistrate Margret Hunter waived the need for a committal hearing, allowing the matter to go directly to trial in the ACT Supreme Court.
He is due back in court sometime next week, but no date has been set for the trial.
