Former Everton cult hero helps team to 13-0 win with four goals in 25 minutes

Apostolos Vellios is a name many Everton fans are familiar with - although his recent goalscoring exploits may come as something of a shock.

The Greek international signed for Everton in 2011 from Iraklis, playing on Merseyside for three years with three goals in 22 appearances for the Blues - the standout strike came away against Chelsea in just 18 seconds in a 3-1 defeat. He did earn plenty of friends from his social media though, with his Instagram posts making him something of a cult hero for the Toffees.

Although showing signs of promise the striker never made it as a regular at Goodison Park. Now playing in Eertse Divisie the Netherlands equivalent to the Championship, the striker has hit a purple patch of form scoring four goals in just 25 minutes in PEC Zwolle’s victory over Den Bosch last weekend.

It set the platform for a remarkable afternoon, as the Greek's early blitz helped the team on their way to a 13-0 win.

Vellios had only scored five goals in 20 games before the fixture and by the final whistle it had nearly doubled to a more than respectable nine in 21.

Vellios stated his delight after the game telling ESPN: “It was great. It was one of the best matches of my career, I didn’t know that (I broke a second-tier record). At the end of the day, it’s just three points hopefully we can continue like this.”

With PEC Zwolle six points clear at the top of the table, both they and Vellios look certainties to be back amongst the Dutch giants such as Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord next season.
