Former Premier League striker Peter Crouch has insisted Leeds United remain thoroughly among the battle to beat the drop despite Sunday’s 2-1 win over Norwich City.
The Whites ended a run of six consecutive defeats with the dramatic win over the Canaries, with Joe Gelhardt netting a 94 th minute after Kenny McLean had equalised just moments earlier.
Leeds now sit four points above the bottom three following the victory, but with Burnley and Everton both possessing games in hand, there is still plenty to play for.
Jesse Marsch’s side will be looking to pick up points in all of their next three matches, as they face Wolves, Southampton and Watford.
Writing in his latest Daily Mail column, Crouch claimed that the Leeds’ win over Norwich has not got them out of danger just yet, while also detailing some experiences of his own from his playing days during relegation battles.
“No team is ‘too good to go down’. There are genuine issues at Everton. And Leeds, despite yesterday’s win over Norwich, are in trouble.
“At this exact stage of that relegation season [with Stoke City], the message was: we’ve got 10 games left, these are 10 cup finals,” he added.
“We went and drew the next one. Right, we have nine cup finals! We lost that. Eight cup finals! And again. Seven cup finals! It kept going and going.
“By the final fortnight, we had to win each of our last three games — and handsomely too, given our inferior goal difference. We won one game in that last 10. It just gets away from you so quickly. Maybe we just weren’t cut out for cup finals.
“That sort of thing will happen to one team, it always does, and the dogfight at the bottom this year is fierce and ever-changing.
“Burnley were manufacturing a way out of it a few weeks ago but are now probably favourites alongside Norwich and Watford to drop. To put this crazy season into context: I tipped Brentford for relegation hours before they beat Burnley on Saturday and that result has changed everything.
“If there is one cliche I can get on board with, it is ‘six-pointer’ as those games are massive.”
