Former England boss hails Gareth Southgate's 'big choice' amid the boost Newcastle picks can give

Glenn Hoddle believes Gareth Southgate has made the right decision in handing Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson a World Cup call-up. The former England boss also believes the number nine along with Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier will bring the confidence of a strong start with the Magpies into the international camp.

Wilson was one of several headline inclusions in Southgate's 26-man squad, edging out competition from Tammy Abraham and former Magpies prospect Ivan Toney. The Three Lions manager emphasised the importance of form in his selection, with the opening fixture against Iran to come in just nine days' time.

Wilson has registered six goals and two assists in the Premier League so far, while also facing spells on the sidelines with a hamstring injury and a recent bout of illness. Hoddle believes the 30-year-old is the right backup for England captain Harry Kane, while also offering the possibility of two-man pairing up front.

He told Betfair: "I'm pleased that Callum Wilson has gone, that was a big choice for me, having him second to Kane ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham. Wilson can score goals and he can come in and play with Kane if you need two up front. Wilson could also lead the line as he does for Newcastle. That's a really good attribute for the squad."

Injuries to Reece James and Kyle Walker, coupled with the indifferent form of Trent Alexander-Arnold, has made Trippier a likely starter in the opening clash with Iran. Hoddle believes the veteran full-back's gamble of swapping life with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid for an initial relegation battle on Tyneside has proven to be a smart choice.

He added: "Kieran Trippier has had a good season. Newcastle has been an excellent move for him. They have been the team that's surprised a lot of people this season and they're brimming with confidence."
