Former Edinburgh student who had leg amputated bags place at Winter Paralympic Games

A former Edinburgh student is over the moon after managing to get a spot on Team GB at the Winter Paralympic Games.

Hope Gordon, 26, shared her excitement on social media this week, just a few months after trying cross country skiing for the first time.

Despite the quick turnaround, the Napier graduate has shown her incredible skill and talent, and will now be competing in the Nordic Skiing team as they take on the rest of the world.

Ready to spring into action, Hope has continued to show that anything is possible with a disability, after having her leg amputated in 2016.

Originally from Rogart, Sutherland, Hope had suffered with her leg since the age of 12, when it had "stopped working for no reason."

Eventually being diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, the condition left Hope in unbearable pain, and was unable to compete in the sports she loved.

With the CRPS causing her to need a wheelchair, Hope and her family eventually were forced to crowdfund to pay for the operation to have the leg removed.

Despite the huge change to her life, Hope's operation gave her a new lease of life, starting her university career at Edinburgh Napier just one month later.

After graduating in 2018, the 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength, and will now take on her biggest challenge yet.

Speaking on social media, Hope said: "SO proud to officially be announced in the Nordic Skiing team to represent Paralympics GB in Beijing.

"Sometimes you just need to say yes. A few months ago I said yes to an exciting opportunity to try out cross country skiing.

"Initially I just thought it would be a really fun form of training to benefit my boats. The past wee while has been a whirlwind, a bit bonkers, but such a fun adventure into this sport. ⁣

"So far I’ve had eight weeks on snow, I certainly never imagined that at this stage I’d be lining up against the best in the world at a Paralympics I will also be the first ever female to represent @paralympicsgb_official within Nordic skiing - girl power!"

The Winter Paralympic Games 2022 will take place from March 4-13.
