Former East Lothian garage could be turned into town centre car wash

A former garage forecourt in Haddington town centre could be turned into a new car wash under plans lodged with East Lothian Council.

Applicant Abdullah Abboud, from West Barns, has applied to turn the former Ideal Garage site, at Hardgate into a hand car wash service.

And his application says the new business will not have a significant impact on traffic at the site, which has been closed for several years.

A traffic impact report submitted with the application says: "The conversion of the petrol station to a car wash facility is not expected to generate a significant increase in traffic volumes.

"The primary reason for this is that the car wash services will mainly cater to the existing customer base of the petrol station, with minimal additional traffic attracted."

The proposed new car wash would see traffic enter the forecourt from Hardgate and exit through neighbouring Victoria Street in a one way system.

It will also include parking bays and a seating area for customers.

The application comes after a separate application for a drive thru car wash at another former petrol station on the outskirts of the town was refused by planners who ruled it was in the countryside.

The proposal from Gleam Machine, who are based in Dunbar, would have seen the business open next to Gateside business park just off the entrance to the town from the A1.
