Former Dumfries drill hall turns back time with 1940s tea dance

The clock is being turned back on Sunday to a 1940s tea dance at the former drill hall in Dumfries.

In that decade and beyond it was a popular place for friends to hangout and for couples to meet, evoking plenty of memories for older generations.

Now, fun and a “high tea” with home baking and perfectly cut sandwiches plus plenty of music and dance are set to thrill new generations, with the vintage experience to be offered by-monthly through the summer at the Loreburn Hall.

As well as the food served by waiters and waitresses from Ladies and Gents of Distinction, the audience can immerse themselves in the era with the hall transformed for the occasion.

Run voluntarily by members of Dumfries Community Choir as a community project, the tea dance afternoons, which started on Wednesday, include more than 35 performers to entertain paying visitors.

The first half of the afternoon will be music from the 1930s/40s and then a switch to the 1950s/60s.

Angie Briggs, lead volunteer for the High Tea Vintage Experience, said: “This is a great way to spend time with an older person in your life.

“Bring them along and give them the space to remember the bygone days. It is incredible to think what part the Loreburn Hall played in the local dance scene, before and after the Second World War.

“Our High Tea project is designed to give space for nostalgia and the theatricality of remembering the sounds, tastes, and sights of the past.”

The bi-monthly project which was also held on Tuesday, will take place again on June 18 and 22, and August 24 and 27 with tickets now available too book.

There will also be a free slower mid-week edition for residents of care homes who are looking for a social activity to connect them with the wider community.
