Former Dolphins lineman gets D-II head coaching job

Former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Nate Garner is the new head coach of the North Greenville Trailblazers, the university announced earlier this week.

Garner, 40, had a brief NFL career after he was picked in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft by the New York Jets. The Dolphins claimed Garner off waivers at the end of his rookie training camp and he spent the next seven seasons with the team.

The versatile backup took snaps at almost every position on the offensive line, but especially at guard where he started eight games during the 2009 season.

After retiring from the NFL, Garner worked as an offensive line coach at ASA Miami, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and Limestone University.

At North Greenville, Garner will take over a program that finished 6-5 in 2024, the team’s first winning season since 2016. After the year, Jeff Farrington stepped down as the team’s head coach.

The Trailblazers compete in the Gulf South Conference of Division II.
