Former New York Congressman George Santos has announced his intention to run for office again in 2024. Santos, who was expelled from Congress in December 2023 by a vote of 311-114, made the announcement on social media during President Joe Biden's State of the Union Address.
Santos, 35, expressed his desire to challenge current New York 1st Congressional District Representative Nick LaLota for the seat. He criticized LaLota, accusing him of being a 'Republican in Name Only' and of jeopardizing the future of the country for personal gain.
The former Congressman's term was marred by controversy, with Santos facing a 13-count indictment in May that included charges of wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements. Additional charges were brought against him in October, including conspiracy, wire fraud, and identity theft.
Santos has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently scheduled for trial in August 2024. Despite his legal troubles, he remains determined to re-enter the political arena and challenge LaLota for the congressional seat.
Following Santos' expulsion, Democrat Tom Suozzi won the vacant seat, flipping it from Republican to Democrat. Suozzi defeated Republican nominee Mazi Melesa Pilip in the election.
Santos' decision to run for office again sets the stage for a contentious battle in the upcoming election, with the former Congressman vowing to debate LaLota on the issues and his record as a Republican. The race for the New York 1st Congressional District promises to be closely watched as Santos seeks to make a political comeback despite his legal challenges.
