As the season winds down, the New Orleans Saints coaching search will begin heating up. The Darren Rizzi era started off hot after taking over for Dennis Allen, but it quickly tapered off. Blowout losses to the Green Bay Packers and the Las Vegas Raiders have soured his head coaching resume.
Aaron Glenn and Mike Vrabel have been the names thrown around the most frequently, but there’s another former head coach that’s been added to the mix. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini had this to say: “Expect the Saints to show interest in former Bears head coach and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.” Russini added that Rizzi should receive a shot, and that Mike McCarthy could interest the Saints if he and the Dallas Cowboys part ways.
Nagy rejoined the Kansas City Chiefs after a 34-31 stint with Chicago ended in 2021. He’s currently the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, and this was his path to his first head coaching job. The tenure was short, but it started off really bright. He led the Bears to a divisional title in his first season and was the AP Coach of the Year. He also led the Bears to another playoff berth in his third year at the helm. Since the Bears fired Lovie Smith after the 2012 season, Nagy is responsible for each of their two playoff appearances and their only finish with a winning record.
But Nagy is a surprising name. The connection with the Saints is likely just the beginning of the buzz.
