Former Chelsea star makes major Arsenal Premier League title claim as Man City battle resumes

Mikel Arteta will hope his Arsenal team can continue their brilliant form when the Premier League resumes on Boxing Day. The Gunners sit top of the table at Christmas as they lead reigning champions Manchester City by five points.

Arteta will be missing his star striker Gabriel Jesus for the next two months after the Brazilian suffered a serious knee injury whilst playing for Brazil at the World Cup. The 25-year-old completed a £45million move from City in the summer to reunite with Arteta before being joined by Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Pep Guardiola is looking to add a fourth Premier League title to City's trophy cabinet after Liverpool were the only side to knock them off their perch in the last five years. The Reds, along with Chelsea and Manchester United look to be out of the title race already meaning that the Gunners are the only real threat to City's chances of retaining their crown as Premier League champions.

Speaking to GGRecon, former Chelsea and Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes if the Gunners win the title ahead of Man City, it would be good for the Premier League. Johnson said: “It would be good for the Premier League if Arsenal won the title.

"Somebody outside of Manchester City or Liverpool would ruffle the feathers of everyone and bring the league back to life. It’s good for the Premier League if Arsenal win it but I obviously don’t want them too, but I don’t want Manchester City to win it either.”

Johnson spent four years at Stamford Bridge before joining rivals Liverpool in 2009, making over 160 appearances for the Reds. His allegiance to his former clubs still holds strong but with the Blues and Liverpool seemingly out of the title race, Johnson would rather see the Gunners win the English top-flight over City, who have dominated the Premier League since Guardiola's arrival.
