Former Chelsea star baffled at Todd Boely's £45m transfer decision amid Arsenal claim

Former Chelsea star Glen Johnson has claimed that his old side should have signed Arsenal's new striker Gabriel Jesus this summer.

The Gunners wrapped up a deal for Jesus earlier this month, paying reigning Premier League champions Manchester City £45 million for his services following a 2021/22 campaign that saw the Brazilian provide 25 direct goal contributions across all competitions - impressive numbers when you consider that he played the majority of his matches out wide for Pep Guardiola's side.

However, new Blues owner Todd Boehly should have pursued a deal for the 25-year-old, according to former England international Johnson, who played for the west Londoners between 2003 and 2007. Speaking about Jesus to GGRecon, he said: "A striker that’s already performed within the Premier League is always better than a striker brought in from a different league. They’ve already established what they’re capable of.

"With Gabriel Jesus, I think Chelsea should have bit Manchester City’s arm off to try and get him to be honest. Actually, I’m surprised that City even let him go. And I’m certainly surprised that he’s ended up at Arsenal.

"No offence to Arsenal, but I’m pretty certain that if Chelsea had wanted him he would have gone to Chelsea. It’s bizarre how he left and it’s bizarre where he’s landed.

"For me, Jesus is a top player and, though he’s still young, he’s already done it for a top team in a top league, so why wouldn’t you want him?"
