Former Chargers WR Jacoby Jones dies at age 40

Former Chargers wide receiver Jacoby Jones died on Sunday. The cause of his death was not mentioned. Jones was 40.

In a statement released through the NFL Players Association, Jones’ family said that he died “peacefully” at his home in New Orleans, LA.

“The family, including his mother, Emily and his son, Little Jacoby, are together and are asking for prayers, privacy, and support as they navigate through this difficult time.”

Jones played with the Chargers during the 2015 season, primarily as a return specialist. In five games, he returned nine kicks for 193 yards, averaging 21.4 yards per return.

Jones’ professional career began with the Texans after being selected in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft. He spent five seasons in Houston before signing with the Ravens in 2012. He played in Super Bowl XLVII against the 49ers.

In that game, Jones became the first player in Super Bowl history to score a receiving touchdown and a return score in the same game.

After his stint with the Chargers, Jones finished his career with the Steelers that same season.
