Former Celtic treble winner offered career lifeline 13 months after last match

Former Celtic star Dedryck Boyata has been offered a return to football with Belgian second-tier relegation battlers Lommel....over a year since he last kicked a ball.

The former Belgium international was finally released by Club Brugge in January after he cost them a staggering £190,000 per match.

The 34-year-old Belgian stopper was a guest in November for the Champions League clash between his former clubs Celtic and Brugge and even did the half time draw at Parkhead.

He lashed out at his treatment at Brugge, where he compared himself to a 'hyper-contagious disease' after he was banished from the first team and told to train with the kids.

He made the last of his 26 appearances at Brugge 13 months ago and when his transfer fee from Hertha Berlin and his bumper salary was added up, it was worked out he cost the club an eye-watering £190,000 for every game he completed.

However, he's been offered a route back into the game by Lommel, who are fighting against the drop in Belgium's second tier and are owned by the City Group.

Boyata is mulling over a short term contract after meeting with the club's sports director James McCarron and could return to football if he accepts the deal.

A Brugge statement confirming the defender's exit read: "Dedryck Boyata and Club Brugge decided today to terminate their contract by mutual agreement.

"Boyata (34) came over from the German Hertha BSC in August 2022. The defender eventually played 26 games for Club in which he scored 1 goal."
