Former Celtic title winner Jason Denayer searching for new club as free agent

Former Celtic title winner Jason Denayer is on the lookout for a new club.

The centre-back is currently a free agent after leaving Saudi club Al-Fateh last month.

Denayer - who lifted the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup at Celtic - left the Saudi Pro League side on January 31 by mutual consent.

The 29-year-old had sustained an injury and is set to be sidelined for five weeks.

With Al-Fateh rooted to the bottom of the table, though, there was urgency to recruit a replacement.

However, the club were at the limit of foreign players before agreeing a deal to end Denayer's contract.

Club chiefs have admitted they did not want to lose Denayer but were grateful for the centre-back agreeing to a termination due to the circumstances.

A club statement confirmed: "The club regrets saying goodbye to Jason Denayer. We would like to thank him for his excellent performance, commitment and professional mentality.

"Since his arrival at the club, Jason was one of the driving forces of our team and we would have preferred to keep him with us.

"However, due to his recent (minor) injury, he will not be able to play for about five weeks.

"Due to the current position of the club in the ranking, we cannot wait that long and are obliged to immediately recruit a replacement.

"The club does not legally have the option to field an additional foreign player and that is why we are very grateful to Jason for thinking along in the interests of our club.

"We wish this top defender all the best and hope to see him back at our club."

Denayer joined Celtoc on a season-long loan from Manchester City in 2014 under Ronny Deila. The defender was named PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year.
