Former Celtic talent spotter who unearthed Virgil van Dijk in frame for Southampton recruitment role

Former Celtic star spotter Neil McGuinness is in the frame for the head of recruitment role at Southampton.

The Scot who was behind several huge Parkhead moves during his six years at the club – including the bargain capture of Virgil van Dijk – and is currently director for scouting and recruitment at MLS big guns Columbus Crew. Saints – who previously had Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson on board – are in the market for a new talent chief after Joe Shields left St Mary's for Chelsea.

McGuinness is one of a number of names on the English Premier League side’s radar after almost four years in the United States with Columbus, who lifted the MLS Cup in 2020. The 42-year-old also spent three years with the Qatar Football Federation following his time at Celtic, where he worked closely with bosses Neil Lennon and Ronny Deila.

McGuinness was also linked with a return to the Hoops in the summer of 2021 when the club were on the lookout for a director of football.
