Former Celtic star revels in brilliant Scotland goal as celebrations with ex-Hoops teammates suffer VAR scare

Former Celtic and current Arsenal star Kieran Tierney says he's happy to couple up his Scotland own goal with an actual strike - even if he didn't know it had counter.

The man from Muirhouse celebrated with former Celtic teammates Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor as he wheeled away to take the moment in.

John McGinn's free-kick in the friendly with Poland was knocked in with a prolific edge by the Lanarkshire star, who didn't appear to know much about it.

It made up for an own goal against Israel in a 2-1 defeat back in 2018.

The defender said: "I didn't even know if there was VAR! So for a minute I was thinking, 'is this onside or offside?' But obviously it's good to get a first goal.

"That's me got one goal and one own goal for Scotland so that's me even! It was just the shock! When do I score a header?

"So obviously I was buzzing, great ball in by John McGinn and the set-piece coach, Austin (MacPhee) works a lot on that.

"The manager said if I don't score this game or the next game I'm going back of the park so luckily I got it."

Tierney wasn't happy though with the penalty in which Poland got their leveller from in stoppage-time. Goalkeeper Craig Gordon was judged to have hauled down Krzysztof Piatek and he stepped up to score.

The Muirhouse native added on Sky Sports: "The penalty at the end wasn't a great way to finish the game.

"I never saw it, from my eyes it looked like nothing.

"So we're obviously gutted to lose the goal and the clean sheet. I think we had a lot of chances and we could have scored more than one against them.

"I know it's a friendly but this could have been a competitive game easily enough and you want to see games like that out when you're winning by one goal, against a team that's higher seeded."
