Vance Joseph is going to back to Denver. According to multiple reports, first by Peter Schrager, Joseph is being hired to be the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator under new head coach Sean Payton.
It is a return to the Broncos as Joseph was head coach from 2017-2018 there.
The last four seasons, he was the defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals under head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
Kingsbury was fired after the team’s 4-13 2022 season. Joseph interviewed for the job as head coach but was ultimately released from the final year of his contract after Jonathan Gannon was hired as Kingsbury’s replacement.
Payton also interviewed for the Cardinals’ job and, with Joseph joining him in Denver, it is reasonable to think that Joseph could have been retained as defensive coordinator had Payton been hired.
The Cardinals wanted to hire Payton but were unwilling to meet the draft compensation demands of the New Orleans Saints, with whom Payton was still under contract, despite having retired a year ago.
Joseph was also under consideration for the defensive coordinator position open with the Philadelphia Eagles.
