Former running back Ahmaad Galloway was found dead at his St. Louis, Missouri apartment by police on Monday, according to WVTM 13’s Rick Karle.
Police conducted a wellness check after Galloway, an eighth-grade English teacher at Compton-Drew Middle School, missed class.
“Ahmaad was always on time, very responsible, so we knew something might be wrong,” school principal Susan Reid Reid told WVTM 13. “There wasn’t anything disrupted at Ahmaad’s apartment, so we are thinking that it could have been a medical issue.”
The cause of death won’t be known until the medical examiner submits their findings.
Galloway totaled 1,903 yards from scrimmage and scored 17 touchdowns in four seasons (38 games) at Alabama from 1999-2002. The Denver Broncos selected him in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL draft, but Galloway set out his rookie season while recovering from a senior-year knee injury.
The following year, the Broncos sent Galloway to their former NFL Europe affiliate team, the Scottish Claymores. After rushing for 141 yards and a touchdown in Scotland, Galloway later joined the San Diego Chargers. Galloway also had another stint in Europe, rushing for 516 yards and one touchdown with the Frankfurt Galaxy in 2005, his final season as a pro.
In addition to teaching, Galloway also worked as a high school football coach. He had two children, Austin and Aubrey.
