Former Bristol Rovers manager sacked by League Two club after just four months in the job

Former Bristol Rovers manager Paul Tisdale has been sacked by League Two Stevenage and immediately replaced by Steve Evans, with the Hertfordshire club in real danger of relegation to the National League.

Tisdale took over at Broadhall Way in November but has won just three of his 21 games in charge, with the last on January 29, and Stevenage lie just three points above the relegation zone in the fourth tier.

His final act proved to be the 2-1 defeat to Northampton on Tuesday, Stevenage's ninth game without victory, and after reports emerged on Wednesday morning he was to be dismissed, confirmation came later that evening.

It's the second failure by the 49-year-old who was dismissed by Rovers last February after winning only five of his 19 matches at the helm of the Gas as they tumbled towards the League One relegation zone.

Once considered among the brightest young coaches in English football, after an impressive spell with Exeter City and reportedly in the running to take over as England Under-21 manager, Tisdale's stock has now plummeted significantly.

Stevenage, who have former Gas midfielders Chris Lines, Ed Upson and Zain Westbrooke plus striker James Daly, in their squad, have turned to vastly experienced campaigner Steve Evans to reverse their fortunes with nine games of the season remaining to secure survival. Evans was most recently in charge of League One Gillingham.

“Paul has worked tirelessly for us since he joined but we have won three points from the last nine games to drop into a relegation fight," said Stevenage chairman Paul Wallace. "With nine games to go, we have to change our fortune and we are hoping Steve will do that."

Rovers won 4-0 at Stevenage last month and Joey Barton had previously accused Tisdale of being "negligent" in his coaching of the Gas during his brief stint in north Bristol. Tisdale threatened legal action and Rovers subsequently removed footage of the press conference from their website.
