Former Bristol Rovers and Ipswich Town midfielder Jon Nolan has sealed a move to League Two Tranmere Rovers on a one-year contract.
The 30-year-old signed for the Gas as a free agent the day after the end of the January transfer window following the termination of his contract at Ipswich, but he would make just one appearance for the Gas, appearing as a substitute in the defeat at Newport in March.
The knee injury problems that curtailed his time at Portman Road meant he made a standing start at the Mem and was unable to break his way into manager Joey Barton's plans.
"For me, it was a good opportunity to have a good look at Jon," Barton said shortly before the end of the season. "He’s come in and it hasn’t gone as well as he’d have hoped. He’s only managed to make one appearance, but for us to see what he is capable of and watch him train gives us a good benchmark for where he is.
"A lot of that (decisions on his future) will be depending on how our season finishes, where we are, what we have available, what strategy we decide to take depending on what the challenge is next year."
With the Gas promoted to League One, Nolan would be one of 13 players released by the club at the end of the season and he has joined Tranmere in hope of relaunching his career at a club close to home on Merseyside.
Nolan has had impressive stints over the years with Lincoln City, Stockport County and Shrewsbury Town.
“I’m happy to get the deal over the line," he told Tranmere's club website. "It’s been a long off-season for me and I’ve worked to get to this position fitness-wise so I’m happy to get it sorted.
“I’ve been in training for a week or two to see how it was and I was happy to be here as soon as I came. It’s a massive club and the facilities here are top-notch and I couldn’t ask for any more really.”
Tranmere boss Micky Mellon added: "We have had Jon with us in training now for the past week and we have been able to see the talent he has and can bring to the group already.
“When someone becomes available who we think can help us along and keep the consistency and tempo, then we will do that and that’s exactly what we have done with Jon.
“I’m looking forward to having him part of the group and I’m glad we have been able to sign him up so now he can concentrate on his football and how he can help the team for the coming season.”
