Former Bristol City midfielder could leave Swansea City following shock contract dispute

Former Bristol City favourite Jamie Paterson's future at Swansea City is hanging in the balance after a disagreement over the terms of his contract extension which was believed to have been agreed earlier this month.

Paterson was among 10 first-team players to depart Ashton Gate last summer due to a cost-cutting exercise to reduce the Robins exorbitant wage bill, with Kasey Palmer under contract and Alex Scott and Ayman Benarous also coming through the academy.

However, since signing for Swansea, Paterson has been one of the most productive attacking players in the Championship with eight goals and four assists for Russell Martin's side.

The terms of his one-year deal last summer included a clause for an additional 12 months once he reached 25 appearances, and although the 30-year-old has only played 22 games there was a desire to secure his future for longer.

But, according to the Athletic, Paterson didn't play in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town as he told Martin and Swans sporting director Mark Allen earlier in the week he wasn't in the right frame of mind to play, with the contract dispute the motivating factor.

Swansea reported they had reached an agreement to extend his stay until 2023 earlier this month but that was on the same terms, rather than an anticipated improvement in wages.

Although Paterson has been among Swansea's most influential players this season, he is still on considerably less money than a host of first-team players who have not had anywhere near the same impact.

Wales Online report that three Championship clubs are monitoring the situation, including promotion-chasing West Brom, with Paterson originally from the Midlands and the lure of a return to that part of the country will be hard to ignore.

If he is to leave, Swansea will demand a fee for the playmaker who now has 18 months to run on his contract.
