Former Bristol City head coach Dean Holden is stepping back into the dugout to take the vacant job at Charlton.
The 43-year-old has been without work after leaving Stoke towards the beginning of the campaign following the sacking of manager Michael O'Neill. Holden had been his No2 since April 2021 after leaving Bristol City.
Having stated his intentions to return to management, he has been linked with a handful of clubs over the previous 12 months including Blackpool, Rotherham, Walsall and Exeter.
According to the South London Press, Charlton will announce his appointment as their new head coach today, replacing former Bristol Rovers manager Ben Garner who was sacked at the beginning of December following just six months in charge.
The Addicks are facing a difficult League One campaign and currently sit 18th with just five wins from 21 matches. If Holden's task wasn't challenging enough, the previous three managers haven't lasted more than seven months in charge under owner Thomas Sandgaard.
Holden, who also managed Oldham for 15 games after retiring in 2015, spent four years on the backroom staff at City under Lee Johnson. He emerged as a surprise contender for the job following Johnson's sacking in July 2020 and got off to a flying start with four consecutive victories.
His time at Ashton Gate would span 41 games in total and lasted until February 2021 when a sixth consecutive defeat saw Holden relieved of his duties. City were 13th in the league at the point of his dismissal.
Holden spoke of his desire to get back into management earlier this year when he told talkSPORT: "I think I some point in the future I'd love to do it again, it was a job I absolutely loved, I've got to be honest. When I decided to go back in as an assistant having been a manager, it was important that I could work with a guy that I could really learn from."
