Former boxing world champion Teofimo Lopez offers to help train Conor McGregor

Former world champion boxer Teofimo Lopez has offered to help train Conor McGregor as the UFC star looks to return to the octagon this year.

The ex-unified lightweight champion took to social media to make a comment on of the Irishman's posts, telling McGregor "I'd get you right, champ". Lopez and McGregor are coming off the back of losses against George Kambosos Jr and Dustin Poirier respectively, although the American's defeat was the first of his career.

And some fans were unimpressed with his comment, with one replying that he needs to "get yourself right first" after his split-decision loss last November. Another was more supportive, saying: "Yeah boy! Both you boys on a come back path", while another shared the flags of Honduras, who Lopez represented at the Olympics in 2016, and Ireland where McGregor is from.

Both McGregor and Lopez have been dealing with severe injuries as the result of their last fights, with the Irishman having broken his leg during the first round of his trilogy bout with Poirier.

Lopez, after losing to Kambosos Jr, was diagnosed by a doctor as having pneumomediastinum with "extensive air in the retropharyngeal space", which in layman's terms means a very serious issue with his lungs, likely as a result of a tear in his oesophagus.

McGregor has been sharing a number of videos and pictures from his training, while Lopez has tended to keep more to himself, but they are both expected to fight again within this year. Lopez shared an ad eight weeks ago that showed him training again, captioning the post that he was going "back to work".

Meanwhile, McGregor recently returned to his old boxing gym in Dublin; the Crumlin Boxing Club, where he hit pads in front of a number of fellow members. He is said to have hit a weight as much as 190lb during his time away from the octagon, and looked huge in the photos under which Lopez commented.

"What a beast, the comeback will be worth it," one fan said in response to the post, with another adding: "This man is going to be a problem when he gets back. Looking in great shape." One commenter even believed it was the best shape of his career, saying: "Best physical condition so far keep up the fighting for Ireland."

McGregor has indicated that he wants to return at welterweight, instead of cutting down to lightweight where he fought Poirier in his last two outings. He has challenged champion Kamaru Usman, although he is also currently injured and will likely face Leon Edwards in a rematch before taking on the Irishman.
